Este pasado mes de octubre se cumple el décimo aniversario de una de las bandas más luchadoras de Brasil: Hazy Hamlet. Formados en 1999, cuentan con dos demos y un single. Tras una serie de dificultades, por fin se ponía a la venta el 25 de abril de 2009 su esperado “Forging Metal”. Heavy Metal clásico y épico con actitud, independientes por opción y con orgullo. El vocalista de la banda, Arthur Migotto, quiso hablar con nosotros. -First of all, I would like to congratulate you about the ten years defending a name in the Heavy Metal scene: Hazy Hamlet. Please, can you introduce the band and tell us something about her origins?
Wow, thank you so much for the words, Diego! It is a true honour to answer an interview for you and we thank you for the opportunity for us to show our dedicated work.
Hazy Hamlet is a Brazilian classic metal band with epic themes and a love for old automobiles, valve amps and vinyl discs, as well as the bands from 70s and 80s. It was established by bassist Fabio Nakahara and guitarist Julio Bertin in 1999 as a quintet and reduced to a quartet in 2004. I (Arthur Migotto) have joined the group in 2002 to take the singer position and drummer Cadu Madera have joined in 2008, when our former drummer decided to leave the band. Since then we have a very stong and stable group, mostly because now all members share the same vintage metal as influences.
-En primer lugar, me gustaría felicitaros por los diez años que lleváis defendiendo un nombre en la escena del Heavy Metal: Hazy Hamlet. Por favor, podrías presentar a la banda y contarnos algo sobre sus orígenes?
Wow, muchas gracias por esas palabras, Diego. Es un verdadero honor concederte una entrevista y te agradecemos la oportunidad de brindarnos el poder mostrar nuestro dedicado trabajo.
Hazy Hamlet es una banda brasileña de metal clásico con temas épicos y un gusto por los viejos automóviles, los amplificadores a válvulas y los discos de vinilo. También por las bandas de los 70´s y los 80’s. El grupo se formó de la mano del bajista Fabio Nakahara y el guitarrista Julio Bertin en 1999 como quinteto y se redujo a cuarteto en 2004. Yo (Arthur Migotto) me uní a la banda en 2002 como cantante y el batería Cadu Madera se unió en 2008, cuando nuestro baterista original decidió dejar la banda. Desde entonces tenemos una formación muy fuerte y estable, mayormente porque ahora todos los miembros compartimos y cosechamos las mismas influencias del metal.
-Your album have been released in a way “Proudly Independent”, why?
Although working hard, there was no true interest from labels. Some wanted us to do everything by ourselves, and then release the album and take the profits. We all know music industry is fucked, but this doesn´t mean we should be exploted. Playin metal in Brazil and far from capitals like Sao Paulo makes it even harder – and we wanted some support, not explotaition. As we play for love not for profits, we decided to face it all and try to do it by ourselves. It took us four years, because we´ve faced tons of problems, and almost disbanded. Finally, we find motivation and finished and released “Forging Metal” independently, an outdated classic metal album the way we always wanted, not exactly what metal labels are seeking right now. The album is not perfect, but repercussion is amazing, so why shouldn´t we say we are Proudly Independent? We love metal, and we surely are!
-Vuestro album lo habéis sacado de un modo “Orgullosamente Independiente”, ¿por qué?
Pese a que hemos trabajado duro, no había un verdadero interés por las discográficas. Algunas querían que lo hiciéramos todo nosotros mismos, luego lanzar el álbum y llevarse los beneficios. Sabemos que la industria discográfica está jodida, pero eso no quiere decir que tengan que explotarnos. Tocar metal en Brasil y sobre todo, lejos de capitales como Sao Paulo, es incluso más complicado – y nosotros queríamos apoyo, no explotación. Como tocamos por amor y no por beneficios, decidimos encararlo todo nosotros e intentar hacerlo por nuestros propios medios. Nos llevó cuatro años, porque tuvimos que enfrentarnos a montones de problemas y casi nos separamos. Finalmente, encontramos la motivación y editamos “Forging Metal” de modo independiente, un atemporal album de metal clásico en el estilo que siempre quisimos, no exactamente lo que las discográficas buscan hoy en día. El álbum no es perfecto, pero la repercusión es asombrosa, entonces,¿por qué no deberíamos proclamar el “Orgullosamente Independiente”? Amamos el metal y estamos orgullosos de ello.
-How “Forging Metal” is being accepted by metal fans? What track are the most popular in your gigs?
It is being great! Acceptance is far better than expected for an unsigned release! We receive praise messages from who buy it and even from those who download it and without shame write us to motivate us or ask when are playing in their city. About the most popular track, it is really hard to say. Although all our songs are cliché by choice, each one has a different theme or cadence, attracting the attention of different listeners. This is great, because it´s not the typical album for the radio, where people enjoy or know only one song. We have heard all track titles as a favourites of someone, and this really makes us glad!
-¿Cómo está siendo aceptado por los fans “Forging Metal”? ¿Qué temas son los más populares en vuestros conciertos?
¡Está siendo estupendo! ¡La aceptación está siendo mucho mejor de lo que esperábamos para tratarse de un disco independiente! Recibimos mensajes de alabanza de quienes han comprado el disco e incluso de aquellos que lo han descargado y sin recato nos escriben para motivarnos o preguntarnos cuándo vamos a tocar en sus ciudades. Acerca del tema más popular, es realmente difícil pronunciarse. Aunque suene a cliché que todas nuestras canciones son favoritas, cada una tiene su temática o cadencia, atrayendo la atención de diferentes oyentes. Esto es genial, porque no es el típico álbum para la radio donde la gente disfruta o conoce solo una canción. Hemos oído todos los temas como favoritos de alguien, ¡y esto realmente nos hace estar contentos!
-The cover album is fantastic as well! Who is the cover maker?
Wow, thank you, glad you like it! When we conceived the cover idea, we decided we wanted it painted, not bizarre digital collation like contemporary stuff. I´ve made a deep search in Internet for fantasy art painters, and finally got to Brazilian artist Celso Mathias. There are almost no fantasy art painters here, so he was a true found. Also, he had never made a metal album cover artwork before, so he painted it passionately and the result was superb. We were delighted, more than what we expected. -La portada del disco es fantástica también. ¿Quién la ha hecho?
¡Wow, gracias, un honor que te guste! Cuando concebimos la idea de la portada, decidimos cómo queríamos el dibujo, nada extravagante digitalizado en comparación con lo que se hace ahora. Hicimos una profunda búsqueda por Internet en pos de ilustradores de fantasía, y finalmente conseguimos al artista brasileño Celso Mathias. Apenas hay ilustradores fantásticos aquí, por eso fue un verdadero hallazgo. Además, él nunca había hecho una cubierta para un disco de metal, es por lo puso toda su pasión en ella y el resultado fue excelente. Quedamos encantados, más de lo que esperábamos. - I read that the songs of “Forging Metal” were written by all line-ups. I know maybe is too early to talk about a new album but are there ideas for the next recording?
Yes, it is indeed too early as we want to promote “Forging Metal”, but we already have many ideas for the next album. Two songs are basically completed, only lyrics missing, and I´m working a new one with the group and until now sounds good to our ears! Anyway, we won´t hurry, each sted in it´s time!
-Leí que las canciones de “Forging Metal” fueron escritas por todas las alineaciones de la banda. Sé que quizás sea pronto para comenzar a hablar de un nuevo álbum pero…¿hay ideas para la próxima grabación?
Sí, es demasiado pronto mientras queramos promocionar “Forging Metal”, pero ya tenemos algunas ideas para el siguiente disco. Dos canciones están básicamente completas, sólo faltan letras perdidas y estoy trabajando en el nuevo con el grupo, hasta ahora nos está sonando bien. De todos modos, no nos apresuraremos, ¡cada cosa a su tiempo!
-What bands from the Brazilian underground metal you would like to recommend?
There are so many good underground bands here that we could fill a whole book! Well with recorded albums I would recommend Dominus Praelii, Comando Nuclear, Dreary Lands (heavy), Steel Warrior (power), Andralls, Violator (thrash) and Drowned, Holder (death).
-¿Qué bandas del underground metálico brasileño te gustaría recomendar?
¡Hay muchas buenas bandas underground aquí con las que podríamos llenar un libro entero! Bien, con discos publicados recomendaría Dominus Praelii, Comando Nuclear, Dreary Lands (heavy), Steel Warrior (power), Andralls, Violator (thrash) and Drowned, Holder (death).
-What bands do you think have influenced the Hazy Hamlet´s sound?
Most bands who are roots of subgenre of hard/metal from the 70´s and 80´s have influenced us. This includes Deed Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio, Thin Lizzy, Accept, Iron Maiden, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Manilla Road, Liege Lord, Testament, Slayer and NWOBHM bands. I could keep naming all of them, but would take a week, I belive! LOL!
-¿Qué bandas crees que han influenciado el sonido de Hazy Hamlet?
Muchas de las bandas que son raíces del subgénero del hard/metal de los 70 y 80 nos han influenciado. Esto incluye a Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio, Thin Lizzy, Accept, Iron Maiden, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Manilla Road, Liege Lord, Testament, Slayer y las bandas de la NWOBHM. ¡Podría seguir nombrándolos pero estaría una semana, eso creo!
